<dl> <dt>x</dt>
<dd>input: real values</dd> <dt>give</dt>
<dd>Boolean with <code>TRUE</code> meaning to return a list of three
 items: the value, an estimate of the error, and a status number</dd> <dt>strict</dt>
<dd>Boolean, with <code>TRUE</code> meaning to return <code>NaN</code>
 if status is an error</dd></dl>
