Install the **spacyr** R package:\n\n - From CRAN:\n\n ``` r\n install.packages(\"spacyr\")\n ```\n\n - From GitHub:\n\n To install the latest package from source, you can simply run the\n following.\n\n ``` r\n remotes::install_github(\"quanteda/spacyr\")\n ```\n\n2. Install spaCy and requirements\n\n Simply run:\n\n ``` r\n library(spacyr)\n spacy_install()\n ```\n\n If you want to install a specific version, simply add it to the\n install command:\n\n ``` r\n library(spacyr)\n spacy_install(version = \"apple\")\n ```\n\n Check the helpful version tool on and to\n see what is available.\n\n3. (optional) Add more language models\n\n If left unchanged, `spacy_install()` adds the default\n “en_core_web_sm” model. You can add more language models with\n `spacy_download_langmodel()`. For instance, to install a small and\n efficient German language model:\n\n ``` r\n spacy_download_langmodel(\"de_core_news_sm\")\n ```\n\n Check out available models at .\n\nIf you run into any problems, you can try the manual installation path\ndescribed below.\n\n### Manual installation and troubleshooting\n\n`spacy_install()` performs a number of tasks to set up a virtual\nenvironment in which spaCy is installed. Virtual environments are the\nrecommended way to install Python applications, as the lack of central\ndependency conflict control (which is performed by CRAN in the\n`R`-world) means that conflicts between packages are a lot more common.\nHence each Python package and its dependencies are usually installed in\ntheir own folder.\n\nUsually, none of this should concern you. However, experience shows that\nsome systems run into problems during installation that are hard to\nforesee by developers. Below, we therefore explain how you can perform\nthe steps in `spacy_install()` manually, to debug any problems that\nmight occur. Please only file a GitHub issue after you have tried to\nmanually run through the steps, so we can provide you with more targeted\nhelp.\n\n1. Install Python\n\n You can use your own installation of Python for the steps below. By\n default, `spacy_install()` downloads and installs a minimal Python\n version in the default directory used by the `reticulate` package\n for simplicity. This can be done with a single command:\n\n ``` r\n python_exe <- reticulate::install_python()\n ```\n\n The function returns the path to the Python executable file. You can\n run this again at any time to get that path (the installation is\n skipped if the files are already present). If you prefer to use a\n specific version of Python, you can use this function to install it\n and it will be picked up by `spacyr`.\n\n2. Set up a virtual environment\n\n By default, `spacyr` uses an environment called “r-spacyr”, which is\n located in a directory managed by `reticulate`. We can create it\n with:\n\n ``` r\n reticulate::virtualenv_create(\"r-spacyr\", python = python_exe)\n ```\n\n If this causes trouble for some reason, you can install the\n environment in any location that is convenient for you like so:\n\n ``` r\n reticulate::virtualenv_create(\"path/to/directory\", python = python_exe)\n ```\n\n Note, that `spacyr` does not know of the existence of this\n environment unless you tell it through the environment variable\n `SPACY_PYTHON`. You can do that either in each session with:\n\n ``` r\n Sys.setenv(SPACY_PYTHON = \"path/to/directory\")\n ```\n\n or you put it into your `.Renviron` file. You can use this little\n helper function to make the change permanent:\n\n ``` r\n usethis::edit_r_environ(scope = \"user\")\n ```\n\n We also need to tell `reticulate` that it should use this\n environment from now on.\n\n ``` r\n reticulate::use_virtualenv(Sys.getenv(\"SPACY_PYTHON\", unset = \"r-spacyr\"))\n ```\n\n We use `Sys.getenv(\"SPACY_PYTHON\", unset = \"r-spacyr\")` to check if\n `SPACY_PYTHON` is set and use the default otherwise.\n\n3. Install spaCy\n\n Installing `spaCy` and its dependencies is again done through\n `reticulate`. We check again if SPACY_PYTHON is set, in case you\n chose a non-default folder.\n\n ``` r\n reticulate::py_install(\"spacy\", envname = Sys.getenv(\"SPACY_PYTHON\", unset = \"r-spacyr\"))\n ```\n\n4. Install spaCy language models\n\n The language models are installed in the same way.\n\n ``` r\n reticulate::py_install(\"en_core_web_sm\", envname = Sys.getenv(\"SPACY_PYTHON\", unset = \"r-spacyr\"))\n ```\n\nIf any of those steps fail, please file an\n[issue](https://github.com/quanteda/spacyr/issues) (after checking if\none already exists for your error).
